Season 1, Episode 2: "Diversity Day"

In this episode, three key things that are highlighted about Jim:

  1. He is a greedy and lazy salesman
  2. He is continuing to try to break up Pam’s engagement
  3. He may be trying to get Michael in trouble

1. GREEDY

Jim is very persuasive, but lazy, 25% of his total annual sales is from a single sale. We learn that he could give the customer, Mr. Decker, a discount (which Dwight does), but chooses not to, and in fact, tries to get an extra 1% off them for recycled paper. Jim is so pleased with himself when he makes this sale annually, he buys himself a mini-bottle of champagne each year.

2. PAM

When we see him interact with Pam, he immediately tries to undermine her by suggesting moves in the game for Freecell she is playing, to show off how smart he is. When Jim is talking to Ryan, and thinks Ryan is calling Pam cute, he immediately says “She’s engaged”, to stop Ryan interfering in his plans. At the end of the episode, Pam falls asleep on his shoulder, so he knows his plan is working to ruin Pam’s engagement. “Not a bad day!

3. SPECULATION

It may have been Jim who filed the complaint to Dunder-Mifflin corporate about Michael’s Chris Rock routine. This might be part of a plan to get the manager job.
